ABOLITION OF THE TENT CAMPS

    Mr. Ilham Aliyev, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan has met with Internally Displaced Persons 12 times in 5 years, yet in October 1, 2003, on eve of the Presidential elections, he declared in his first meetings held in the newly built settlements for refugees in Bilasuvar region that no tent camps shall remain in the country.


    This mission set by Mr. Ilham Aliyev was fulfilled in 2007, i.e. one year earlier and the period when the refugees lived in tent camps was ended and they were moved to the new settlements with full infrastructure meeting modern standards.


    The remaining 7 tent camps in the Republic were abolished in December, 2007 as a result of unprecedented activities carried out during the past 5 years. 36 settlements were built for the 10401 families or 47 thousand IDP's living in those camps as well as for those who lived in railway cargo carriages and other places in Barda and Imishli regions. The settlements with residential area of 534 thousand square meters included 34 schools, 4 musical schools, 18 kindergartens, 26 medical centers, 21 communication centers, 22 clubs-community centers, 29 administrative buildings, 5 fire posts. In addition, 366 km of roads, 438 km water lines and 583 km overhead power lines were constructed, 141 artesian wells were drilled and 28 water reservoirs with different capacities and 20 pump stations were constructed. 349 transformers were installed and mine clearing activities were carried out in 2650 hectares of land.
    More than 40 thousand IDP's and the local population found temporary employment.
